The Unfortunate Picnic Potluck

When the weather is finally getting warm (but not too warm), the clouds are parting, and the sun is peeking through, you know it is time for a good long outing. You text your friends to confirm they are free and get excited for an impromptu

picnic. There is no better activity on a picnic than laying on the grass with a collection of delicious snacks that everyone prepared. Your group chat is filled with conversations on

what each person will contribute:

Your friend that is chronically late to everything decides to make a fruit salad. They cut up their favorite fruits, toss them in a container and shake until they all mix. This is a great idea for them, as they are busy and don’t have much time to prepare, but they still get to bring a light and enjoyable snack.

That one friend that everyone is annoyed by but loves anyway volunteers to bake some brownies. In a bowl, they mix sugar, flour, melted butter, eggs, cocoa powder, vanilla, baking powder and salt. They spread this concoction into a greased oven safe pan. They put the pan into their preheated oven. They let it bake for twenty to thirty minutes, until the top is dry and the edges are crispy. They have trouble carrying the tray on their bike, but they find the struggle worth it as the brownies turn out looking delicious. They can’t help sneak a piece before the event even begins.

You, being the tryhard that you are, make a mango sorbet. You start by peeling your mangoes. Then, you put them in a blender. You add sugar, water, and lime juice. You blend all ingredients until they feel smooth. Once that is done, you pour the mixture into a container and leave it in your freezer until your sorbet is solid. You grab your handy refrigerated container so that your sorbet doesn’t melt on your way there.

When you arrive at the picnic, you see that all of your friends have already left. You have waited hours for your sorbet to harden, and they have gotten tired of waiting for you. It is now dark out. You take a mental note never to hand make sorbet for an impromptu picnic again. You go back home and drown your sorrows in eating the entire batch of the sorbet you made in one sitting.
